Racing in the Hamble Classics!

Sai See is a 40 foot 1960 teak-hulled Sparkman & Stephens yawl.

I’m looking for crew for the Hamble Classics: Aug 31 - Sept 1st

Sai See is a fun and interesting boat to sail. in addition to a standard headsail and main she has a mizzen, and therefore an opportunity to hoist a mizzen staysail. In the right conditions, she can have 5 sails up!

She is quite rustic compared to modern plastic yachts, but she does have a galley, bunks and a new, clean lavac toilet. Shower facilities are available onshore where the boat is berthed in Hamble, as well as at the marinas we visit.

Crew join the boat based on a shared contribution of costs - booked in advance, this is around £120 per person.

Interested? Click below for the Sai See’s website, or for my phone number. You can also message me here on Crewbay using the ‘Send message’ button at the top of the page.

Happy sailing!

  • Boat descriptionSai See is a 12 metre Sparkman and Stephens yawl built in 1960 in Hong Kong. She has a teak hull, douglas fir and mahogany decks, covering boards and toe rails and spruce masts and spars. On board, Sai See carries simple equipment, including instruments for depth, speed and wind, an auto-helm system, GPS and radar reflector. There is a panel-mounted radio, as well as a DSC-enabled hand-held. A standard offshore life-raft is mounted to the coachroof and there is also an inflatable dinghy with an outboard motor. Navigation is done using an iPad running Navionics, backed up by a set of paper charts, hand-bearing compass and binoculars. Following the design of Carlton Mitchell's famous ocean-racing Finisterre, (which is the only boat to ever have won the Bermuda Race three times) Sai See has proved a capable boat even in heavy weather, sailing far and wide to destinations ranging from Norway to the Azores. Sai See currently carries a yankee and 140% genoa, mainsail, mizzen and mizzen staysail - but is currently waiting for a new spinnaker. She's quick on a reach and with a lifting keel, resulting in variable draft from 1.4 to 2.6 metres she is a tactically interesting boat in a race, a delight to sail in shallow water or far inshore in creeks inaccessible to boats with deeper draft. She's a delight to sail.
