Deckhand - Temporary / Seasonal - $Min 500 USD/Max 3000 - United States
Newport, RI to the East coast of Newfoundland and back to Newport.
Postion:
Looking for a deckhand. I have mostly had female crew in the past and it’s been a good fit (happy to provide references). Open to working with men as well.
Requirements:
- Some sailing experience/knowledge necessary but could be trained over a couple of weeks if you do not have larger vessel experience. You must know at the very least your points of sail and have experienced them on the water.
-Physically fit
-Not sea sick
-No smoking
-No drugs.
-Light drinking, social or no drinking. No drinking while underway.
-Able to live in a confined environment for days at a time and entertain yourself
-Enjoy being outdoors, hiking etc
What is expected:
-Day and night watch standing
when underway.
-Sharing in the cooking and cleaning
-Positive outlook
What you can expect:
-A skipper with over 55K, many of them offshore, who favors safe decisions and that listens to the needs and suggestions of the crew
-Well kept boat with very good sailing abilities
-Your own cabin/shared bathroom
-All vessel costs and food paid for
Pay: dependent on skill level and negotiable. No one will get onboard without some sort of pay.
Info about the trip:
-Leave from Newport, RI and cruise southern New England for crew and skipper to learn to work together.
-Leave around July 1 for Nova Scotia.
- Several stops along the east coast of Nova Scotia.
-French Islands of St Pierre et Miquelon/South West coast of Newfoundland and East Coast of Newfoundland.
-May cruise in tandem with another vessel
-I may have my wife and or daughters or one couple onboard for portions. Should that happen crew would not be expected to do more. Everyone contributes equally to daily life on board (cooking and cleaning).
About myself: I am married, we have two adult daughters and we spent 4 years cruising and living on the boat with our daughters when they were children. I consider myself open minded and enjoy good discussions. I have taught sailing (three years) and have been a charter skipper (nine years). I am easy going and very respectful of space, not looking for romance, just someone responsible, clean and adventurous to share the boat. My wife might be on board for periods of time but no more than a couple of weeks in total.I can provide references from former crew for people who are serious about getting onboard as well as a complete resume.
Typically I would like to have a couple of face to face chats and if possible references from former skippers/crew you have sailed with in the past.
Crew Review
I crewed with Claude for just short of one year. We started in Newport, RI doing day tours and overnight charters. We then cruised up to Nova Scotia, then down to the Bahamas. Claude is an amazing person to work with. It was my first time living onboard with anyone, and as a younger woman heading off to live and sail with a virtual stranger, I can't imagine a better situation to find myself in. When we first spoke, we FaceTimed and I was able to meet his wife and two daughters, who were around my age. I was 20 at the time we first started working together, and he made it a priority to make sure I felt safe and comfortable with the situation. There has never been a strange or creepy interaction with him, which I typically find is a rarity. The biggest takeaway was that any issue that I might've had living in such tight quarters, I was able to communicate it and have him actually listen, then actively make an effort to respect my wishes and change what bothered me. It was of course only minor issues, just the typical living and working difficulties of living in a boat with another person. Safety is always #1 with me, and he time and time again gave me so many opportunities to learn and grow within my sailing career, while taking on all the scarier more dangerous missions. This was due to him prioritizing keeping me from getting injured. He is a fantastic listener, great communicator, and a kind soul overall. His family has taken me in many times, inviting me into their home, treating me like one of their own. Most recently I have been helping Claude with dry dock work in Bridgeport, CT. I have a dog now, so he found a dog friendly Airbnb, and has allowed her to come to the boatyard during the whole process. He is very accepting and adaptable and anyone would be lucky to work with him. :)
