Cornwall / Helford to Hamble! June 9th to 11th

Sail with myself (the owner) and others on Sai See - a 1960 Sparkman & Stephens 40 foot wooden yawl!

She's been in the yard getting a new deck, loads of varnish, newly painted gleaming creamy topsides and a new genoa.

What' s not to love? :-D

  • Boat descriptionSai See is a 12 metre Sparkman and Stephens yawl built in 1960 in Hong Kong. She has a teak hull, douglas fir and mahogany decks, covering boards and toe rails and spruce masts and spars. On board, Sai See carries simple equipment, including instruments for depth, speed and wind, an auto-helm system, GPS and radar reflector. There is a panel-mounted radio, as well as a DSC-enabled hand-held. A standard offshore life-raft is mounted to the coachroof and there is also an inflatable dinghy with an outboard motor. Navigation is done using an iPad running Navionics, backed up by a set of paper charts, hand-bearing compass and binoculars. Following the design of Carlton Mitchell's famous ocean-racing Finisterre, (which is the only boat to ever have won the Bermuda Race three times) Sai See has proved a capable boat even in heavy weather, sailing far and wide to destinations ranging from Norway to the Azores. Sai See currently carries a yankee and 140% genoa, mainsail, mizzen and mizzen staysail - but is currently waiting for a new spinnaker. She's quick on a reach and with a lifting keel, resulting in variable draft from 1.4 to 2.6 metres she is a tactically interesting boat in a race, a delight to sail in shallow water or far inshore in creeks inaccessible to boats with deeper draft. She's a delight to sail.
